The Canon EOS R50 is a compact and lightweight mirrorless system camera package suitable for versatile photography and videography. Its 24.2-megapixel APS-C sensor produces sharp images, and 4K 30p videos enable high-quality content creation. Thanks to the tilting touchscreen, you can easily shoot from different angles, and the electronic viewfinder helps eliminate distractions. The Dual Pixel CMOS II autofocus precisely tracks moving subjects, ensuring successful shots even in fast-paced situations.
The EOS R50’s 24.2-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor (22.3 x 14.9 mm) captures images at up to 6000 x 4000 pixel resolution. Aspect ratios are versatile: 3:2, 1:1, 4:3, and 16:9. The camera has a fixed low-pass filter and a primary RGB color filter. Image stabilization is not in the body, but the lens’s optical stabilization works for both photos and videos.
Focusing is handled by Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS II autofocus, which automatically covers 100% horizontally and vertically. The focus area includes up to 651 zones and 4503 points for photos, and 527 zones and 3713 points for videos. Autofocus recognizes and tracks human faces and eyes, as well as animals (cats, dogs, birds) and vehicles. Focus modes include single-shot, continuous, and automatic switching in A+ mode.
Exposure metering is based on real-time 384-zone sensor measurement. Available modes include evaluative, spot, partial, and center-weighted metering. The ISO sensitivity range extends automatically from 100 to 32,000 and manually from 100 to 32,000, expandable up to 51,600. The shutter is an electronically controlled curtain shutter, with exposure times ranging from 30 seconds to 1/8,000 second using the electronic shutter. There is also a mechanical shutter (30–1/4,000 s). Exposure compensation is ±3 EV in 1/3 EV steps.
The EOS R50 records video in 4K Ultra HD quality at 3840 x 2160 pixels and 30 frames per second. Full HD videos can be recorded at up to 120 frames per second for slow-motion footage. Video formats are H.264 and H.265, with 8-bit or 10-bit HDR PQ color sampling. The camera supports an internal stereo microphone as well as an external microphone input via a 3.5 mm mini-jack. The display is a 7.5 cm (2.95″) TFT touchscreen with approximately 1.62 million dots of resolution. The electronic OLED viewfinder offers 0.95x magnification and 2.36 million dots.
The camera includes a USB Type-C port, HDMI Micro output, and a 3.5 mm microphone input. Wireless connections include Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n) and Bluetooth 4.2, allowing images to be transferred to smart devices or remote control via the Canon Camera Connect app. The camera also supports PictBridge wireless printing with Canon printers.
The body is made of aluminum alloy and durable technical plastic, measuring approximately 116.3 x 85.5 x 68.8 mm. It weighs 328 g without battery and memory card, and 375 g with the battery. The battery is a rechargeable LP-E17 lithium-ion battery, lasting about 440 shots with the LCD screen and 310 shots using the viewfinder. Charging is possible via the USB C port. The camera supports a four-level battery indicator and various power-saving settings.
