The Ricoh GR IV Monochrome is a compact and high-performance camera for photographers who want genuine, pure black-and-white expression in a modern and easily portable form. At the heart of the camera is a new 25.74 MP APS-C-sized monochrome CMOS sensor without an anti-aliasing filter – a combination that produces exceptionally sharp details and natural tonal gradations.
The package is completed with a 5-axis image stabilizer (up to 6 stops), a built-in red filter for creating classic contrast effects, and a fast electronic shutter (up to 1/16000 s), making the camera reliable both in low light and bright daylight.
The GR lens 18.3 mm F2.8 (28 mm full-frame equivalent) utilizes an optical construction of 7 elements in 5 groups, including 3 aspherical elements. The result is even sharpness from edges to center and natural reproduction of textures and fine lines without artificial graininess – exactly what quality black-and-white photography demands. Hybrid AF focusing (phase detection + contrast) and the GR series’ fast Snap focus ensure immediate response, especially in street photography. Normal focus starts from 0.1 meters, and macro mode allows shooting from only 0.06–0.15 meters.
The built-in red filter darkens the sky, emphasizes cloud shapes, and brightens red subjects, providing traditional filter effects without external accessories. The filter can be conveniently activated with the Fn button. Among the shooting modes, “Solid” offers strong, pure contrast and edge clarity, while “Grainy” adds a cinematic graininess while preserving details across the entire tonal range. Additionally, adjustments are available for contrast (highlights and shadows), sharpness, clarity, tone, and grain.
For handheld shooting, the camera features a 5-axis, sensor-shift image stabilizer with compensation up to 6 stops. The AA filter simulator (off / low / high) reduces moiré by utilizing the stabilization unit. The electronic shutter enables flexible operation in bright light: at F2.8 aperture from 1/3200 to 1/16000 s and at F5.6–F16 from 1/5000 to 1/16000 s.
The GR IV Monochrome offers modern wireless connections for a smooth workflow. The camera supports both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.3 LE, allowing fast and reliable image transfer to mobile devices and remote camera control. The USB-C port supports data transfer, charging, and DisplayPort video output, further expanding the camera’s usability.
The camera records 14-bit RAW (DNG) files as well as JPEG images in sRGB and AdobeRGB color spaces. Internal memory is approximately 53 GB (at least 995 RAW images), with additional support for microSD cards. The magnesium alloy body is finished in matte black; a semi-glossy GR logo and a white-lit power button complete the minimalist, monochromatic look.
