The Herman Miller Sayl office chair is designed with a great balance of quality and price in mind, while still being beautiful, ergonomic, elegantly crafted, and environmentally friendly.
Designer Behar drew inspiration from the Golden Gate Bridge in his hometown of San Francisco, wondering if the design principles used in the bridge could be applied to an office chair. He ended up creating a vertical pillar for the chair, its “spine,” to which a flexible 3D-printed mesh was attached. The design of the backrest, with its mesh, began to resemble the sail of a sailboat, leading to the name Sayl, a combination of sail and the Y-pillar of the suspension bridge.
