Grand Theft Auto VI is Rockstar Games’ open-world action-adventure and the first new main installment in the series since 2013’s Grand Theft Auto V – the game that became the second best-selling video game of all time with over 225 million copies sold. After more than a decade of anticipation, GTA VI takes players to modern Vice City and the entire state of Leonida, built exclusively for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. The story is told from the perspectives of two playable protagonists, Jason and Lucia.

Jason and Lucia have always known the odds were against them. But when an easy job goes wrong, they find themselves in the darkest side of the sunniest place in the United States, at the center of a criminal conspiracy spanning the state of Leonida. They must trust each other more than ever to survive.

Two playable main characters: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos

Jason wants an easy life, but things only get harder. He grew up around hustlers and criminals and tried to shake off a restless youth in the army, but ends up in Leonida Keys doing what he does best: working for local drug runners. Meeting Lucia could be the best or worst thing that’s ever happened to him.

Lucia’s father taught her to fight as soon as she could walk, and life has been hitting her ever since. Defending her family lands Lucia in a Leonida prison, from which she is released on a stroke of luck. Now Lucia wants above all the good life her mother dreamed of since Liberty City – but instead of fantasies, Lucia is ready to take control with whatever it costs. Life with Jason could be her way out.

The state of Leonida: from neon lights to wetlands

The game world of Grand Theft Auto VI covers the entire state of Leonida, from Vice City’s neon lights to tropical islands, wetlands, and remote backcountry. Each area is unique and has its own story to tell.

• VICE CITY – Far from the ’80s but still the sun and party capital of the United States. From Ocean Beach’s art deco hotels to Little Cuban panaderías and VC Port’s cruise terminals – glamour, business, and greed all in one city.
• LEONIDA KEYS – A tropical archipelago where the dress code is casual and bars are full. Beneath the surface lie some of the most beautiful and dangerous waters in the United States.
• GRASSRIVERS – Leonida’s untamed crown jewel. Alligators are the most famous attraction, but among the mangroves lurk far more dangerous predators and stranger discoveries.
• PORT GELLHORN – The state’s forgotten coastline. Cheap motels, closed amusement parks, and a new economy driven by malt beverages, painkillers, and gas station energy drinks.
• AMBROSIA – The heart of Leonida, where American industry and old-school values dominate. The Allied Crystal sugar refinery provides jobs, the local motorcycle gang runs everything else.
• MOUNT KALAGAN NATIONAL PARK – A wilderness area on the state’s northern border offering hunting, fishing, and off-road trails. Mystics and paranoid radicals live in the remote backcountry, far from the government’s watchful eyes.

GTA 6 characters – Everyone has something to gain – and lose

A colorful cast of Leonida characters surrounds Jason and Lucia, each with their own motives and games in play.

• Cal Hampton – Jason’s friend who prefers staying home listening to coast guard radio traffic with a few beers and private browser tabs. Cal is content with his laid-back paranoid life on society’s fringes – but Jason has bigger plans.
• Boobie Ike – A local Vice City legend who turned street knowledge into a legitimate empire: real estate, a strip club, and a recording studio. Always smiling until business is discussed. His biggest stake is his collaboration with young Dre’Quan at Only Raw Records label.
• Dre’Quan Priest – More hustler than gangster. Street sales were a way to survive, but music has always been the goal. Since signing the Real Dimez duo, Dre’Quan’s eyes are firmly on Vice City’s music scene.
• Real Dimez – Bae-Luxe and Roxy have been friends since high school. They turned local dealer extortion into money with viral songs and nonstop social media presence. After five tough years, they hope Only Raw Records will bring a new rise.
• Raul Bautista – An experienced bank robber driven by confidence, charm, and cunning. Raul is always looking for new players to join him, but his recklessness raises the stakes with every job – sooner or later, it’s double or nothing.
• Brian Heder – A classic drug runner from Leonida Keys’ smuggling golden age. Still runs business through his boatyard with his third wife Lori. Jason gets to live rent-free in one of Brian’s properties – as long as he handles local legacies.

The most ambitious game world in the Grand Theft Auto series

Grand Theft Auto VI is built exclusively for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles, and everything points to Rockstar having fully utilized over a decade of development time. Leonida appears to be the largest and most detailed game world in the series so far – full of explorable interiors, shops, nightclubs, motels, and other locations whose quantity and vibrancy seem to set a new bar for open-world games.

Jason and Lucia are the series’ first romantically linked duo, between whom players can freely switch. Based on trailers, missions utilize this dual play in diverse ways – cooperation, perspective shifts, and coordinated heists. Leonida’s nature also seems to play a more significant role than before: alligators, wild boars, snakes, flamingos, dolphins, and sharks inhabit the state, and underwater areas appear to be freely explorable. Rockstar has also hinted that the game world will be expanded after release with new content.
