See and be seen – The Garmin Varia™ RCT716 radar, camera, and rear light is designed to enhance your cycling safety with its lightweight build and a bright light that shines up to 5 lumens, covering an impressive 220-degree angle. A new feature of the RCT716 is its ability to record events, capturing any incidents that may occur on the road.
INTERNAL CAMERA
The internal camera records events behind you at a stunning resolution of 1080p at 30 frames per second. You can ride with peace of mind knowing that you’ll have clear video footage if something unusual happens. Trust this compact camera to watch your back; it detects events and automatically records footage during, before, and after the incident.
The updated version of the Garmin Varia comes with support for the Varia app, eliminating the need for a separate cycling computer. The RCT716 is also approved for use in German road traffic, and it does not feature blinking functions. While a flashing light can grab attention, it may be illegal in several countries and can trigger migraines or seizures. The direction and speed of a flashing light can also be harder to detect than a steady light. When used with a compatible smartphone, the Varia™ RCT716 supports apps from other manufacturers, such as Ride with GPS, displaying radar alerts directly on maps.
The radar detects approaching vehicles from at least 140 meters away, activating a bright light that spans 220 degrees and providing an audible alert to ensure you’re seen in time. It primarily relies on detecting speed differences, allowing it to distinguish between fast-moving and slowly passing objects. This lightweight and streamlined device is easy to mount vertically on your bike’s seat post, and with a battery life of up to ten hours, you can ride safely for long periods.
The device requires a separate Garmin cycling computer, app, or wireless connection to compatible devices.
