Far Cry 6 introduces the player to the world of modern guerrilla warfare in the tropical island nation of Yara. Yara is like a country trapped in the past, living both the dream of a naturally beautiful paradise and under a brutal dictatorship. The country is ruled by President Antón Castillo, who aims to raise his son Diego as his successor—a leader who would understand his father’s methods of subjugation and control of the people. President Castillo’s noble ambition is to restore his country to its former glory, but by extremely questionable means and without accepting any resistance.
The player’s character is resistance fighter Dani Rojas, who can be played as either a male or female warrior. Yara is full of guerrilla fighters ready for resistance, but they need support and leadership in their efforts to break free from the dictatorship’s yoke. Partly under Dani’s leadership, other guerrillas are ready to take up arms and action when peaceful means for freedom and justice fail. The diverse environment of Yara includes lush jungles as well as urban settings like the capital city Esperanza. To survive against overwhelming military power, Dani must adapt to different environments and recruit forces. Additionally, the player needs a versatile arsenal, various vehicles, and animal companions made famous by the game series.
The game’s story-driven narrative is strengthened by a cast of award-winning Hollywood names. The dictator leader is portrayed by charismatic Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, The Boys) and his son by Anthony Gonzalez (Coco). The game’s theme music is composed by Pedro Bromfman, known from the Narcos series. The opening scene is directed by Emmy-winning Patrick Clair (Westworld, True Detective).
